Burghley House
Tour of the House

The finely worked state bed in the Black and Yellow Bedroom (pictured) was last used by the late King George VI and HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1936 when Duke and Duchess of York. The bed dates from the late 18th century and its hangings are fine examples of English needlework. In the past few years a comprehensive restoration programme has returned the curtains and hangings to their former glory.
The Marquetry Room
Dominating the Marquetry Room is the painting of "Rent Day" by Pieter Breughel the Younger. Alongside it hangs a fascinating and intricately detailed wood carving of a dead bird by Jean Demontreuil, a Frenchman who worked in the mid 18th Century.
The Queen Elizabeth Bedroom
Although never actually used by Queen Elizabeth I, this room has been so called for 150 years. Queen Elizabeth I visited William Cecil at his other houses but when she made her only visit to Burghley she was prevented from staying in the house by an outbreak of smallpox within the household.
